Retailers: How to make the most of your poster and banner advertising

As a retailer, you need to do all you can to get people through the door of your store and maximise their spend once they’re in there. One of the best ways to do this is through banners and posters, both in your shop window and throughout your store. However, it is not just a case of putting up banners and posters and hoping for the best. If you want them to be as effective as they can be, you need to pay particular attention to several factors. Do this, and you should see a healthy boost in sales.

One of the worst things in any form of advertising is mixed messages. Your poster needs to have a clear and defined message, don’t be tempted on trying to say too much. You need your customer to understand the message of your poster instantly, anything less than this and your poster or banner will not be effective.

At each stage in producing your poster, think about it from the customer’s perspective. You as a retailer may understand the purpose and message of your banner/poster but does your customer? The best way to find out is to ask your customer, after all it is them who you are targeting.

Put them at the right height

Your poster or banner can be the best in the world, but it is useless if nobody can see it! Make sure your posters and banners are placed at a height that customers can read and engage with them easily and efficiently. Don’t have customers either stooping down to read them or hurting their neck looking up.

Your posters and banners should be refreshed on a regular basis. They should be changed throughout the year to coincide with new product launches and events such as Christmas, Easter, Valentines Day and Halloween. This will ensure they are both fresh and focussed.

Consider lighting

Depending upon where your banners and posters are placed, it may be worth considering using lighting to help your posters and banners stand out, especially if you’re using them in your shop window. Research has shown that adding lighting to shop windows can increase sales by up to 107%, so it’s definitely worth considering. The reason is that the clever use of lighting can immediately draw attention to the poster or display.
